2nd Penang Bridge 89pc completed

AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: RM4.45b cost will take at least 20 years to recoup

THE Second Penang Bridge is on track for completion by September next year, said Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) managing director Datuk Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib.

He said the bridge was now 88.5 per cent completed and on target to achieve 90 per cent completion by year-end.

"We are on track to complete the bridge next year ahead of schedule by two months, in September," he told a media conference at the Second International Seminar on the Design and Construction of the Second Penang Bridge, here yesterday.

Ismail said development costs of the new bridge was RM4.45 billion.

The traffic projection for the bridge was 25,000 users per day.
"It will take us a long time (to recover the construction cost). At least 20 years. But we are trying to save money in the construction and financial costs.

"We don't want to trouble the government. As far as possible, we are trying to be independent."

The Second Penang bridge will be a seismic-resistant bridge that can withstand tremors of up to 8.2 on the Richter scale with an epicentre of about 300km away.

The seminar was officiated by Works Ministry secretary-general Datuk Himmat Singh.

Upon completion, the 24km-long bridge, of which 16.9km will be over water, will become the longest bridge in Southeast Asia.

It will also become the longest bridge in the world that has incorporated the High Damping Rubber Bearing application in its construction.

The two-day International Seminar on the Design and Construction of the Second Penang Bridge is jointly organised by JKSB and the Malaysian Highway Authority.

The seminar involves 13 technical working papers on the design and construction of the bridge.

Oh my English..my favourite subject

From beginning of my schooling day until I entered to university as far as remember I have an attraction for English. English always gives me extra energy and satisfaction in my study. I never feel anything boring about this subject. As my father is a manager in Panasonic factory,he always helps me to learn the subject well. This is because my father always speak in English everyday in his worked. He always gave encouragement to me to not give up when facing difficulties during the lesson. This subject need not memorizing like parrot.

My favourite subject is English because English is the basis of our ability to communicate with one another. English has taught me numerous skills and has helped me to become an analytically minded individual, changing my perspective on various issues. English has contributed to my overall growth as a young person, as it has showed me the many points of views, ideas, and beliefs of the human population. English has opened my eyes on many issues, and helped me to develop skills, intellectually as well as theoretically.

Besides, I can see how important a person who mastered in English language to make it easier to interact and communicate. For some people who are proficient in English much easier for him to communicate, especially when we are dealing with people who come from outside the country. It will also increase our self-confidence and prevent us fooled when dealing with others. For example, individuals who pursue their studies abroad, they will be more confident to socialize, interact and communicate if they fluency in English. Let us take the example of an entrepreneur who traded overseas, where he mastered the English language, it will prevent him from being cheated.

I think English is not a tough subject. Simply practise English grammar and text books daily and  I shall gain knowledge about it. I read the newspapers daily and try to understand the headlines of the newspaper. I will memorise, understand and speak. With continuous practice, I hope also can speak and writting very well without any grammar error. Although my english not very good but I try to do the best that I am good and fluency in speaking english.

Love's Mandarin subject

My favourite subject is Mandarin. It is a new subject for me. I study this subject because this subject were among one of the subjects that I learned in semester one. At first I was given the choice whether to take the subject of Arabic or Mandarin as a third language. Without thinking, I am confident with my decision to take Mandarin as a third language subject. In fact, my interests are more likely to mandarin language even before this I had never studied it.

When the first mandarin class began, my friends and I are taught from the beginning. Lecturers who teach us also a very good and funny. We taught one at a time so that we can pronounce the words correctly. In addition, the lecturers also want us to understand each of the words spoken. Usually,in our Mandarin class was never far with laughter because our lecturers will make jokes and mandarin words that we say is wrong. This is because every word mandarin has different tone or intonation. There is also the same word mandarin but we should see the tone of it because it brings a different purpose.

Our mandarin class every Wednesday. When we run out to learn a topic, the lecturer would ask us to read and memorize every word that we have learned and examples of sentences in the Mandarin book. This is because the lecturer will test us by asking the questions that we have learned. If one of us cannot answer the question, the lecturer will not get mad but get them to learn and continue to learn to be proficient in Mandarin. Lecturer told us to memorize and so because he want our skilled and understand quickly in Mandarin. When we understand a word, there is no problem for us to answer Mandarin test. Mandarin test consists of four parts, namely the quiz online, the dialogue in pairs or oral, listening test and written test.

In mandarin book contains eight sections of the title. Each title provides a different story. That is why I enjoy learning Mandarin because it is a new experience for me. Although not proficient in Mandarin speaking, I will try and not easily give up to continue studying it. I never feel tired and bored when  I enter the mandarin class. Assignment given by lecturer will my friends and I are trying to do as much as possible. This is because my friends and I did not want to disappoint the lecturers who have taken the trouble to teach us that non-native-speaking mandarin language to make we can understand and speak a bit of word in Mandarin.

Travel with my family

Through activities such as family travel, family relationships can be bonded. Families also will be more peaceful and harmonious. Actually, a harmonious family helped to create a more peaceful and harmonious as the most basic family to a harmonious community. Without a family, never caring society should be.

My family and I like to travel. Normally we would go on a trip together at the end of the year because at that time my father was able to leave long. The place we always go every year or
we will go is Genting Highlands. We like to go to Genting Highlands because it is a
cool place. In addition, accommodation such as hotels or apartment is very comfortable
because the services provided are good.

This is a picture of the Hotel Theme Park at Genting Highlands  in places where our family stay.

When we have been there we would go to outdoor games. There are various types of games are fun. There is also a game that tests fear. For example, space shot and flying coaster.
This game is my eldest and my second brother who only dare to play. They have a high level of courage and not afraid of speed and height. For them, it is more fun to be able to raise the level of their courage.

The games called "The Spinner" was very interesting and so fun. My family and I play the game and at the start of the game will run slow then faster and faster. When the game was over, some of us are starting to feel like vomiting. It was a funny.
