Sport : Pandelela receives UM Olympian scholarship

KUALA LUMPUR: London Olympics bronze medal winner in diving, Pandelela Rinong was today named the sole recipient of the University Malaya Olympian Sports Scholarship worth RM30,000 a year until 2015.

University Malaya (UM) acting vice chancellor Prof Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud said the scholarship awarded excludes course and lodging fee exemption plus cost of living allowance and training allowance.

"The scheme was introduced to encourage athletes who excelled in sports and academics to continue their studies in UM," he said at the UM 2012 Sports and Recreation Awards night here.
The UM Olympian Sports Scholarship scheme and Pandelela-UM Olympian Fund were also launched today.

The Pandelela-UM Olympian Fund is aimed at taking care of athletes welfare so that they can continue their training in sports without shirking their responsibility in education.

"The setting up of both initiatives shows UM's commitment in producing athletes and acknowledging their contribution to the country in sports and education," he said.
Pandelela won a bronze medal from the women's 10m Platform diving in London.
Meanwhile, 12 awards were presented today, including UM Sportsman and Sportswoman awards won by diver Bryan Nickson Lomas and shuttler Daphne Ng Chiew Yen.
